Thank you for the article and the work you are doing. Love the thought of cruise ships with kite sails. Best wishes. Maybe the lightening strikes can charge up golf cart batteries for alternative use.
References :
Tesla had this figured out 100 over years ago... it would be the opposite of the Tesla tube that requires an energy source for the discharge, but had the capacity to absorb the energy and store it. The Tesla devise had the ability to attract the ionic energy in the atmosphere with out a lightning strike, so it provided constant electrical voltage and amperage.
References :
I live in an area where there are LOTS (1000's) of wind generators but we have very few storms and NO lightning to speak of but Florida or the Mid-West could be good sources of electrical storms. You would need to have an inverter that was capable of EXTREME voltage spikes.

As far as the EXTREME ultra capacitor the first thing that comes to mind is the Biblical Arc of the Covenant, since this was considered to be a capacitor. Economical? Hmmm. The Arc was 45 inches long and 27 inches tall and 27 inches wide and the walls were perhaps about one inch thick ... the exact dimensions and construction technique is in the Kaballah. I think we can rule out the "economical" part since it was constructed of pure gold but it would be capable of holding several lightning bursts.

A most interesting question. I'll have to check out your link. Prb should have done that first but it's 3 am so I'm just checking new questions, but will attempt to edit this later after I watch it.

I would also suggest looking into the Tesla theories. He was interested in this technology and has ideas on how to CREATE a lightning scenario. I think you'll find his works fascinating. The Library should contain some of his works.

Thanks ... I've been wondering how to use the Arc lately and this might be it.

:-)
