What software / computer program do I need for this task?

I'm a work-from-home writer who gets several assignments daily to write articles. In fact I get so many it's almost become too hard to keep track of. I need some way to keep track of what assignments I've agreed to take, what has been done and what still needs to be done, and who has and has not paid me. What kind of program do I need?

You can do it using Excel. There may be job management programs, but what you describe can be put into an Excel work sheet in which you list every job as you get it, have a column for the date, client, price, deadlines, etc. You can color code jobs to show at what stage they are, e.g. new job, jobs started, jobs completed, etc.

Your first page is chronological. You can copy the first page into another page where you sort the jobs by deadline date, into a page where you sort them by customer, etc.

I think excel should work for you if you are looking for something easy to start with.

Once you get really advanced where you need to bill your clients, keep track of your time and track the jobs, and do some accounting you can try something like quickbooks.

If you use microsoft products, you might want to take a look at the downloads section of microsoft.com - they have a number of free templates and downloads for Word or Excel. Search for scheduling and you'll likely find something you can either use or modify for your needs.
